RALEIGH, N.C. - The Great One thought Calgary was home for Michael Stone.
The story goes like this ...
Stone is attending his first professional training camp and the Arizona Coyotes head north for a pair of preseason dates against the Calgary Flames — one in Winnipeg, back when they didn’t have a team to call their own, and the next night at the Saddledome, where he was starring for the Western Hockey League’s Hitmen.
A Manitoba boy, Stone is among the scratches at MTS Centre.
Why? Because Wayne Gretzky, then coach of the Desert Dogs, thinks he is doing the kid a favour.
