Calgary's Cale Makar becomes highest drafted player from AJHL

CHICAGO — Calgary’s Cale Makar wasn’t among the gang of eight top prospects invited to lounge in the green room during Friday’s first round of the 2017 NHL Draft.

Apparently, league executives weren’t paying attention to the scuttlebutt.

Makar’s stock has been skyrocketing in recent weeks and the smooth-skating, oh-so-skilled defenceman wasn’t squirming in his seat for long before the Colorado Avalanche called his name at fourth-overall.

An offensive whiz for the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Brooks Bandits and winner of the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s MVP honours, Makar was the first selection to be summoned from the stands.
