VANCOUVER – The Calgary Flames have reportedly signed top-prospect goalie Jon Gillies, who has opted to forego his senior year at Providence College.
Gillies, a third-round pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, was the NCAA Frozen Four tournament MVP after backstopping the Friars to a national championship on Saturday.
He is to join the team Wednesday in Vancouver, according to WCSH television in Maine, where the Flames are opening their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series with the Canucks.
Gillies has been the No. 1 goalie for the Friars all three seasons at Providence College, and he was the backbone of the team that climbed from being a middling program to a champion.
