Cal head coach Sonny Dykes, for the most part, has leaned on six names this preseason when discussing impressive freshmen: wide receivers Kanawai Noa and Brandon Singleton, offensive lineman Semisi Uluave, and defensive backs Malik Psalms, Evan Rambo and Jaylinn Hawkins.
But defensive coordinator Art Kaufman touted defensive back Trey Turner as his “lead freshman” Wednesday entering the Bears’ season opener against Grambling State. The Mobile, Alabama, native can play either safety or nickelback. And though he wasn’t sure how much time Turner would receive Saturday, Kaufman called Turner “a guy that’ll get some reps” going forward.
Over three years as the starting quarterback at Murphy High School in Mobile, Turner threw for 3,879 yards and rushed for another 2,334.
