PROVO — For the first time since December 2004, BYU is launching a search for a new head football coach after the news Friday that Bronco Mendenhall is taking the job at Virginia.
Athletic director Tom Holmoe has a relatively small pool of candidates to choose from because that coach must be an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Holmoe said Friday he’ll be the one making the hire.
Certainly, BYU is a unique program with a unique culture. The Cougars are independent and there are restrictions here that don’t exist at other schools.
