While Mangum is BYU's undisputed starter, Detmer sorting out backups

PROVO — BYU’s first day of fall camp Thursday featured, among other things, some muffed center-quarterback exchanges.

“When you’re rotating six quarterbacks and three centers,” offensive coordinator Ty Detmer explained, “that happens.”

Fortunately for the Cougars, they have their undisputed starter at quarterback in junior Tanner Mangum, who backed up Taysom Hill a year ago.

Mangum looks confident running the BYU offense.

“Last year you watched player-run practices and he’s the guy standing in the back because Taysom took it over,” Detmer said of Mangum. “His leadership’s really come through this offseason.
