Ute athletic director Mark Harlan extended Whittingham’s deal by two years, saying the agreement was “a high priority in my first year here.”
Whittingham, 59, is now under contract through the 2023 season. In a news release, Whittingham said the extension “sends a positive message to our recruits.”
Whittingham’s most recent extension had come in May 2017, when former athletic director Chris Hill added one year to the deal, going through the 2021 season.
Utah is the Pac-12 South’s defending champion, entering Whittingham’s 15th season as head coach and his 26th season on the staff. The Utes’ spring practice schedule starts Monday afternoon and runs through April 13.
