Utahns support ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, poll finds. But the LDS Church stands in opposition.

Nearly three-fourths of Utahns are in favor of the state Legislature voting to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, according to a poll released Tuesday from UtahPolicy.com.

Last month, Rep. Karen Kwan, D-Murray, introduced a joint resolution calling on Utah to vote for ratification. That same day, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which steadfastly and public opposed the ERA in the 1970s and ’80s, announced it would continue opposing the measure.

The ERA was first proposed by Alice Paul, a women’s rights activist, in the 1920s. After passing the U.S. Senate and House in 1972, the ERA needs 38 states to ratify it before it can be added to the U.
