The Utah Legislature will convene at 5 p.m. Thursday to consider and vote on a package of tax reforms that will see residents holding on to more of their paychecks while paying more for groceries and other purchases.
Thursday’s special legislative session culminates a yearlong discussion on the state’s tax structure, which included an initial reform effort that stalled during the regularly-scheduled general session and led to the creation of a task force to deliberate during the summer and fall.
In its current form, the bill before lawmakers would cut state tax collections by more than $150 million, primarily through a reduction of the income tax rate and a significant expansion of per-child dependent exemptions.
