Utah brush fire may have started in homeless camp

Fire officials in suburban Salt Lake City are investigating the cause of a brush fire that forced the evacuation of a homeless camp in West Valley City.

Firefighters from several agencies responded to the fire in a field near the Jordan River Parkway Trail at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The blaze burned several acres before crews extinguished it about an hour later. No injuries have been reported.

United Fire Authority spokesman Matt McFarland says the fire is believed to have been human caused. He says a preliminary investigating is centered on a series of a propane canisters that were being used in the homeless camp.
