Rice-Eccles Stadium will be expanded to 51,000 seats and feature premium seating in the south end zone, according to plans approved Tuesday by the University of Utah Board of Trustees.
The $80 million project, closing in the bowl on the south end and building new locker rooms, will be financed by bonding apart from state funding, Utah athletic director Mark Harlan said in his presentation to the trustees.
Subsequent approval of the plan is required by the Utah State Board of Regents, the State Building Board and and the State Legislature.
The athletic department's timetable calls for construction to begin after the 2020 football season and be completed in August 2021.
