Steve Powell, the only person to go to prison in the saga of his missing Utah daughter-in-law, the murder of two of his grandsons and the suicide of two of his sons, died Monday in Washington State. He was believed to have been 68.

Word spread Monday night through friends of family of Powell’s still-missing daughter-in-law, Susan Powell, who learned from law enforcement in Tacoma, Wash., where Steve Powell again resided after being paroled in 2017. A formal announcement and a discussion of the cause of death was expected Tuesday.

Steve Powell was never convicted of any crimes having to do with Susan Powell’s 2009 disappearance, and he was already in jail awaiting trial when his son Josh Powell — Susan’s husband — murdered their two sons then killed himself in a fire in Graham, Wash.
