Richmond Times-Dispatch: Cavs extend themselves to hire Mendenhall

The Virginia Cavaliers reached far beyond their time zone when seeking a new football coach. Their coach, meanwhile, reached far beyond his comfort zone.

The Cavaliers on Friday announced the hiring of Brigham Young University's Bronco Mendenhall as the 40th head in U.Va. football history. Mendenhall, a 49-year-old from Alpine, Utah, arrives with a formidable résumé: a 99-42 record in 11 seasons at BYU, 11 consecutive bowl appearances and six bowl victories. His winning percentage (.702) ranks 13th among active coaches with at least five years of FBS experience.

Mendenhall will be formally introduced at a Monday media session on the U.
