PROVO — For the third time this season, BYU freshman quarterback Tanner Mangum led a last-minute, game-winning touchdown drive.
This one didn’t involve any Hail Marys Saturday night against East Carolina, but it did involve him overcoming a hamstring injury.
Mangum left the game late in the third quarter after the injury and returned with 4:01 remaining. He engineered a 10-play, 75-yard drive that ended in a nine-yard touchdown run by Algernon Brown with 19 seconds left.
And that’s how the Cougars outlasted the Pirates, 45-38, before a crowd of 60,186 at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
“What a remarkable performance by Tanner,” said coach Bronco Mendenhall.
