LDS Church will start sending missionary assignments via email, ending the tradition of the ‘white envelope’

The big white envelope soon will be history. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is moving to email to inform its full-time missionaries where they’ll be serving.

The church’s Missionary Department announced Wednesday it has been testing the new process, of sending mission calls via email, and is expanding the system to all its missionaries in Utah and Idaho. By year’s end, officials say nearly all missionaries worldwide with reliable internet access will get their calls online.

“Technology is there, and it’s so easy to do,” Brent H. Nielson, executive director of the Missionary Department, said in a news release.
