On July 19, Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby and Oklahoma University President David Boren announced that the Big 12 board of directors had authorized Bowlsby to begin exploring expansion candidates.
It came as somewhat stunning news to many, considering that just weeks earlier, Big 12 officials indicated that expansion was unlikely.
