BYU sophomore Danny Gelalich’s first career home run, a tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning, powered the No. 24 Cougars to a 10-3 baseball victory over Utah on Tuesday night at Smith’s Ballpark.
The No. 9 batter in the BYU lineup, the right-handed Gelalich took Ute reliever Zac McCleve's pitch just inside the right-field foul pole at the 315-foot sign.
BYU (34-14) had tied the game 2-2 on Casey Jacobsen's RBI single earlier in the inning. Utah (12-32) had gone ahead 2-1 on Shea Kramer's RBI double in the seventh inning.
McCleve came into the game in the seventh inning and struck out BYU star Brock Hale with the bases loaded, but he couldn't work out of his own trouble in the eighth.
