PROVO — Bronco Mendenhall’s a natural born surfer who is trying to catch and manage a tsunami of different-sized waves in his role as football coach.
He’s wearing the caps of politician, counselor, preacher, speaker, philosopher, media source, fundraiser, marketer and academician. This is no different than other head coaches.
Except, in Provo, it is.
He has to be an architect, ever redrawing his plan for a competitive advantage with many disadvantages both culturally and athletically. For instance, he recruited an elite quarterback in Tanner Mangum but he had to wait three years to get him in a freshman uniform.
