Freshman opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week, the association announced Tuesday.
Fernandez helped propel BYU men’s volleyball to a pair of true road wins last week at No. 14 Ball State and No. 1 Ohio State.
Against the Cardinals, he collected his first-ever double-double of 13 kills on a career-high .458 clip to go with a career- and match-high 11 digs. Fernandez also served up a career-high three aces — most on either team — and the second-most blocks of the night with four.
Then, in the upset of the top-ranked Buckeyes, he put up a team-best 19 kills to go with six blocks — tied for most in the match.
