"They shocked us and we weren't ready for it," said BYU receiver Mitchell Juergens, one of three Cougars with two catches, a team-high. "…We were all a little thrown back and wondering what was happening."
Worse, the Cougars didn't come close to scoring, failing to get past the Michigan 30. BYU's longest drive was 41 yards.
Juergens said Michigan's defense didn't show BYU anything it had not seen from Nebraska, Boise State or UCLA. The Cougars were just outplayed, he said.
Penalty bug
The Cougars committed just five penalties for 45 yards, about their season averages, but there were some costly ones in the first half that helped Michigan prolong drives.
