BYU football notebook: Sione Takitaki to join team after spring drills; backup QB battle

Ravell Call, Deseret News

PROVO — BYU standout defender Sione Takitaki is not listed on the spring roster, but coach Kalani Sitake confirmed Monday that Takitaki will join the team after spring practices.

During his Cougar career, Takitaki, a linebacker/defensive end/pass rusher, has dealt with legal issues and suspensions. He was sidelined for the entire 2016 season for undisclosed reasons. In 17 games at BYU in 2014 and 2015, Takitaki has recorded 40 tackles, 11 tackles-for-loss, 6.5 sacks, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and five quarterback hurries.

When he returns, Takitaki will bring a lot to the team, said assistant head coach Ed Lamb.
