BYU football notebook: Cougar defense struggles with starters sitting due to injury

Brigham Young Cougars linebacker Fred Warner (4) and defensive back Micah Hannemann (7) tackle Toledo Rockets wide receiver Corey Jones (4) for a loss during a game at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016.

PROVO — BYU was without the services of starting middle linebacker Butch Pau'u and starting cornerback Troy Warner during Friday's game against Toledo with both absences perhaps hurting the overall defensive performance.

The Cougars struggled defending both the run and the pass, surrendering 304 yards of total offense during the first half of play alone. Toledo running back Kareem Hunt consistently broke tackles for chunks of yardage while the Rocket receivers were able to beat coverages downfield on a consistent basis.
