PROVO — BYU quarterback Joe Critchlow surpassed most expectations in helping engineer a 31-21 win over UNLV in what was his first collegiate start. It's a good thing the true freshman performed so well, as the Cougars will be without sophomore quarterback Beau Hoge for the rest of the season.
Hoge left the Utah State game earlier this year with an apparent leg injury, with BYU coach Kalani Sitake confirming during Monday's press conference the injury sustained was to Hoge's big toe. Hoge re-aggravated the injury during BYU's 20-13 loss to Fresno State, with Sitake stating Monday the team intends to shut Hoge down for the remainder of the season.
