BYU's quarterback room will be crowded this fall.
In a major surprise, the Cougars have added former Jordan High quarterback Austin Kafentzis to their football roster. A sophomore, Kafentzis has three years of eligibility remaining after beginning his college career at Wisconsin, then transferring to Nevada and then Arizona Western College.
BYU did not officially announce Kafentzis' signing, and it is unknown whether he will be on scholarship or a walk-on. However, the former two-time Utah Gatorade Player of the Year is enrolled in school at BYU for the spring semester, which began this week.
Media members who cover BYU are forbidden from contacting players without first going through the athletic department's sports information office, and "newcomers" are generally off limits to reporters until after the first game of the season.
