BYU football: For Mendenhall, bitter loss 3 years ago at San Jose State still stings

PROVO — BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall hasn’t forgotten the last time his team visited San Jose, as much as he may want to forget it.

Three years ago, on Nov. 17, 2012, the Cougars dropped a heartbreaker to the Spartans, 20-14, at Spartan Stadium.

“That was a hard one,” Mendenhall recalled Monday. “It’s funny, of all of the games I’ve coached, I usually only remember the ones that sting the most. That was one of them.”

BYU fell behind, 20-7, after SJSU scored on its first three drives. Down 20-14, the Cougars recovered an onside kick with a little more than two minutes remaining and drove to the Spartans' 21-yard line.
