PROVO — Targeting is a relatively new rule in college football, and BYU coaches are continuing to help their players understand the difference between legal and illegal hits on the opposition.
Sometimes, there’s a fine line.
In the second quarter of the Cougars’ 30-13 win over Connecticut, linebacker Sione Takitaki was flagged for a roughing-the-passer targeting penalty on quarterback Bryant Shirreffs, though there was little contact between the two players. BYU was penalized 15 yards and Takitaki was ejected from the game, drawing boos from the home crowd.
Cougar coaches and players have reviewed the play this week.
