BYU closes out calendar year with New Year's Eve loss to Saint Mary's in league-opener

Saint Mary’s 85, BYU 77

MORAGA, California — It wasn’t the way the BYU basketball team wanted to ring in the new calendar year — or open up West Coast Conference play.

The Cougars dropped their first WCC game, on New Year’s Eve, to Saint Mary’s, 85-74, Thursday night at McKeon Pavilion.

Gael sophomore forward Calvin Hermanson poured in a team-high 21 points, drilling 8 of 12 shots from the field, including 5 of 7 from 3-point territory, and was one of four Saint Mary’s players to score in double figures. Jock Landale and Dane Pineau had 14 and Evan Fitzner and Emmett Naar chipped in 13.
