SALT LAKE CITY — After seeing this week’s college football openers, I had to ask myself: Why worry about whether BYU and Utah play every year? Oh, right. Max Hall, Lenny Gomes, Beck-to-Harline, Ratliff–to-LaTendresse.
But the whole rivalry thing?
That’s so 34-31.
Utah athletics director Chris Hill touched on that a couple of weeks ago when he said Utah fans weren’t upset over the two-year break from playing BYU. Later he announced the teams are looking into meeting every year through 2022.
One weekend into the season, this much seems clear: Both schools are doing fine without one another.
