SALT LAKE CITY — If you don’t count the 12-4 Utah win over BYU on April 6, 1896, this week’s matchup is the earliest game ever between the two longtime rivals, slightly earlier than the Sept. 15 game of 2012.
Some are calling this the biggest Utah-BYU football game in history considering the two rivals are playing after the first regular-season break since World War II, with the added intrigue of former Utah assistant Kalani Sitake coaching against his former team, not to mention the hullaballoo over Utah’s one-year cancellation of the basketball series.
