Once told to give up sports, Etherington secret to Butler's NCAA hopes

Brett Etherington was a high flyer for the Butler Bulldogs. In a college basketball program not known for dunking, he was so adept at it that something once unknown around Hinkle Fieldhouse – the alley oop – was introduced to the playbook.

Etherington’s 23-year-old son, Austin, can dunk but never will be known for his hops. How could he be after five knee surgeries?

A doctor once told Austin to forget about basketball or any other sport. Worry about walking, the doctor said.

The father tried to talk his son into playing baseball so the strain on his body wouldn’t be so great.
