INDIANAPOLIS – Butler has never awaited its NCAA basketball tournament pairing with such a strong resume. Turns out the selection committee thought so, too.
The Bulldogs (23-8) were rewarded with a No. 4 seed, their highest ever, when the bracket was announced Sunday. While they did not get assigned to Indianapolis for the first two rounds — that was reserved for two No. 2 seeds, Kentucky and Louisville — they were dispatched to nearby Milwaukee.
Coincidentally, Butler will open Thursday in the South Regional against a potentially familiar foe: Winthrop, coached by Pat Kelsey, a former Xavier player and assistant coach, and whose roster even features a player named Xavier.
