Third-ranked Michigan was in Indianapolis to play 2-5 Butler in college basketball. Bulldogs center Ed Schilling was thinking what everyone else was thinking.
“I told my wife when I left for the game, ‘Man, we’re going to get killed,’” Schilling recalled.
Jim Petty was similarly uneasy. He was not 6 feet tall, and Butler coach Tony Hinkle was assigning him to guard 6-5 Cazzie Russell, who would be Player of the Year and the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft.
“I thought, ‘Here’s a chance in front of 10,000 people to make a fool of myself,’” Petty said.
