INDIANAPOLIS – One way or another, Butler is determined to bring in another point guard. Or point guards.
Although signing 6-4 Mark Smith, the Illinois Mr. Basketball, remains improbable, the Bulldogs are focusing on graduate transfers and the class of 2018 for help in that area.
Smith, of Edwardsville, Ill., has made recent campus visits to Butler and Michigan State. He wants to visit Kentucky, and continues to be recruited by Illinois and Missouri. Smith has climbed to 52nd in Rivals’ national ranking of 2017 high school prospects.
College graduates who transfer with remaining eligibility may play immediately at their next schools, so that has created an equivalent to free agency.
