INDIANAPOLIS – It is commonplace for college coaches to reach out to athletes enduring hardship or distress, asking about well-being. This time it was athlete calling coach.
LaVall Jordan, the first Black basketball head coach at Butler, heard from white friends and colleagues in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd. No surprise. Jordan was somewhat taken aback when a 20-year-old called him. It was Bryce Golden, one of his Bulldog players.
“I felt like I needed to check in, just to make sure people are doing all right,” Golden said on a video posted Thursday night at the butlersports.
