VILLANOVA, Pa. – Butler has beaten the No. 1 and 2 teams in the nation. In the same college basketball season. And the same team.
Kelan Martin scored nine of his points 22 in a late 18-0 run, and the 22nd-ranked Bulldogs came from behind to beat No. 2 Villanova Wednesday night to end the Wildcats’ 48-game winning streak at the Pavilion.
It was the first time Villanova seniors had ever lost in the on-campus arena.
The shocking outcome prevented Villanova (13-3, 26-3) from securing a fourth consecutive outright Big East championship. The Bulldogs (22-6, 11-5) can share the title if they can win their final two games – Sunday at Xavier and March 4 against Seton Hall – and Villanova loses to both Creighton and Georgetown.
