Under new head coach Ralph Krueger, the Buffalo Sabres began the season with a 9-3-2 record — tied for top spot in the Atlantic Division — but they were unable to sustain their success and by the All-Star break were in the uncomfortable position of being either a long shot for an Eastern Conference playoff race or a seller at the trade deadline.
