The Lightning dominated the first period - not necessarily in all categories, but certainly on the scoreboard. While Tampa only outshot Buffalo 11-8 in the first, they left with a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Stamkos, Johnson, and Kucherov. The Sabres had a few defensive lapses, and Linus Ullmark finally looked like the rookie he was, and was pulled for Chad Johnson during the first intermission.
Johnson would fare much better, though he wouldn't have much more work, stopping all ten Lightning shots through the final two periods, but the Sabres couldn't get anything past Lightning netminder Andrey Vasilevskiy.
