Buffalo Sabres general manager Jason Botterill made the trade with his former team the Pittsburgh Penguins in June when he sent a conditional 2019 fourth-round draft pick in exchange for winger Conor Sheary and defenseman Matt Hunwick.

The University of Massachusetts-Amherst standout went undrafted after his senior year in 2014. After notching 11 points in the playoffs for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2014 and leading the team in points in 2014-15, the Pittsburgh Penguins signed him a two-way contract.
