The Buffalo Sabres looked to be on the verge of making a long-awaited breakthrough earlier this season, when they embarked on an impressive 14-2-2 run that featured a 10-game winning streak and briefly lifted the club to the top of the NHL standings.
The high hopes of hockey fans in Western New York would soon be dashed however, as the Sabres followed up their longest win streak in 12 years with five straight losses, returning to the form that dump them into last place in the league last season and out of the playoff picture for a seventh straight year.
