Normally now that the calendar has switched to October we're talking about NHL hockey, the start of training camps and opening night. But because the players and owners can't come to an agreement we're talking about the KHL and the AHL. With the NHL season currently in limbo many of the Sabres have left town, some are back down in the AHL while others fled to Europe. Here's a brief update on where you can find some of your favourite Buffalo Sabres.
- Cody Hodgson- Rochester Americans
Hodgson will be one of the players to benefit from the lockout. He'll spend his time in the AHL and hopefully be one of the top players which will help him regain his confidence. He claims he's in great shape and is ready for a great season;
“My goal is to play well now. I’m in great shape and hopefully that translates into something positive in my performance." ~ Cody Hodgson
- Luke Adam- Rochester Americans
Adam was a little frustrated with the NHL lockout and being sent back down to the Amerks. He's ready to make that step and hopefully make a full time spot with the Sabres, but for now he'll have to wait. This will be a great test for Adam who will have a chance to further develop his game and prove he can play with the elite young talent of the NHL (many of whom are in the AHL).
"It's not the most ideal situation for us or for me personally, but we still get the chance to play." ~ Luke Adam
- Marcus Foligno- Rochester Americans
2nd year pro Foligno is excited to be back in Rochester to continue developing his game. He notched 39 points with the Amerks last season and is looking to be a leader on the team this season.
"I'm excited to go down to Rochester and develop again, being back in Rochester, I have the opportunity to pick up right where I left off and I'm definitely looking forward to it." ~Marcus Foligno
Next up is players that have headed overseas.
- Tyler Ennis- SC Langnau
Thankfully the Sabres were able to agree to terms on a 2 year extension with Ennis before time ran out as he's headed over to the Swiss Elite League.
- Christian Ehrhoff- Krefeld
Ehrhoff has gone to his native country of Germany to play in the German Elite League for the team he played for before joining the NHL. He won a championship with Krefeld in 2003 and is looking forward to his time back at home.
- Andrej Sekera- HC Slovan Bratislava
Sekera has joined the dark side and turned to the KHL to fill his time while the NHL isn't playing.
- Jhonas Enroth- Swiss Elite League
While Enroth hasn't packed his bags and headed back to Sweden yet, it is only a matter of time before the netminder heads overseas. The Swiss Elite League Enroth is waiting to join is in a legal battle that will hopefully allow NHL players to come and play.
"When they make up their mind I'll probably head home right away" ~ Jhonas Enroth
- Thomas Vanek- Austria
The toughest thing for any professional athlete is to leave his family in order to play. This is something that has had Vanek torn since the NHL entered lockout September 15th. With a wife and 3 little kids at home that decision couldn't have been easy. But it appears Vanek has finally had enough and will head overseas to play. While it is not 100% confirmed he will head over to Austria but if he does he could join the Graz 99ers as soon as thursday.
There are some Sabres that are staying put and taking place in make-shift practices but those are getting a little boring and players are starting to explore other options. Jason Pominville is joining an elite league in Quebec that will play against other professional Quebec teams and perhaps travel Canada.
The longer this lockout wages on look for more Sabres to head overseas or find other outlets.
Which Sabres will you be following?
