Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion who hadn't competed in singles since she was injured at Centre Court in 2021, lost in her return at Wimbledon on Tuesday, falling to Harmony Tan in a decisive third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7).
Williams began the third-set, first-to-10 tiebreaker in dominant fashion, winning the first four points. Tan, however, indicative of how the match was played, won the next five to take back the momentum.
Williams then won the next two points to seize it right back, going up 6-5 on a cross-court volley that barely cleared the net.
