Robert Woods knows a little something about standing up to a challenge.
Last summer, then-Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone stressed to Woods the importance of elevating his performance against the increased competition he would face in training camp.
Woods responded by firmly establishing himself as the Bills’ No. 2 receiver behind the team’s much-celebrated first-round draft pick, Sammy Watkins. He outperformed Mike Williams, whom the Bills acquired in a trade, for that distinction and also fended off fellow 2013 NFL Draft classmate Marquise Goodwin and Chris Hogan.
After 16 regular-season games, Woods had 65 receptions, the same number as Watkins for a second-place tie on the team behind the 66 of running back Fred Jackson.
