They were mavericks in the pro football world of the 1960s. The Buffalo Bills, like the rest of the charter members of the AFL, bucked the establishment National Football League and set up their own league. And the Bills of the mid-1960s carried it one step further—emphasizing defense in an AFL dominated by offensive firepower.
On Sunday, the Bills 1964 and 1965 AFL Championship teams will be honored at halftime of the Bills opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Eighteen surviving members of those championship teams will take a bow at midfield and enjoy a standing ovation from the sellout crowd.
