The Buffalo Bills use a heavy dose of rotation along the defensive line. Over the course of the Sean McDermott era, the Bills have rarely had defensive lineman exceed 65% of the snaps taken on defense. In fact, it’s happened in just three seasons — Jerry Hughes exceeded that threshold in 2017 and 2018, and Trent Murphy did so in 2019 — during McDermott’s tenure.
With that in mind, the third, fourth, and fifth person on the defensive end depth chart becomes much more valuable for a team like the Bills. Whereas on some teams, those guys are only taking two or three out of every ten snaps, with Buffalo’s defense, those players are essentially expected to split time with the starters over the course of a season.
