How NBA vote system damaged Brook Lopez’s All-Star hopes

Despite leading all Eastern Conference centers in scoring, Brook Lopez didn’t come close to being voted into the All-Star Game by the fans and was not selected Thursday night as a reserve, losing out to Andre Drummond, Jimmy Butler, DeMar DeRozan, Paul Millsap, Chris Bosh, John Wall and Isaiah Thomas.

The voting was separated into frontcourt and backcourt, meaning centers were lumped in with high-scoring small forwards, which DeMarcus Cousins told Yahoo Sports was disrespectful to big men.

“I think it can get out of hand at times, absolutely,” Lopez said. “But again, that’s what happens when it’s opened up to the fan votes.
