The Brooklyn Nets are in the unenviable position of having no cap room and only one draft first round draft pick until 2019, yet this season has made it clear that the Nets need to make some serious upgrades to their roster if they want to compete for a championship. Here are their top three priorities this offseason to get back on that track:
1) Dump Salary
Joe Johnson and Deron Williams will each make over $21 million next year, and Brook Lopez is set to make $16.7 million as well. Brooklyn desperately needs cap relief, and with Lopez being their most appealing trade piece, they need to pull the trigger on a trade to get rid of him. Johnson and Williams will be harder to move because of their huge salaries, but if they draw interest from anyone, Brooklyn needs to do whatever they need to in order to dump their salaries.
2) Acquire Draft Picks
The Nets should be willing to take in anything to get rid of one of their bad contracts, but they also need to ask for draft picks in return, even if they're second round picks. Brooklyn and Atlanta will swap first round picks this year, and that's the last draft pick the Nets have until 2019. Three years with no draft picks would put Brooklyn even lower in the Eastern Conference, so getting any kind of pick to bring in young talent would be welcomed.
3) Find A New General Manager
Brooklyn is in this position because of two disastrous trades they made with the Atlanta Hawks and the Boston Celtics, and the responsibility for that falls on general manager Billy King. The Nets are so far in the hole that they need to make moves before they can make more moves to actually help themselves, and that's a sign of terrible leadership.
