Che Adams notched a ninth minute winner to earn Southampton the bragging rights over local rivals Bournemouth in the south coast derby.
The striker rose up above the backline to steer a header beyond Cherries shot-stopper Neto in the early stages of the match at the Vitality Stadium.
The victory sees the Saints pull themselves away from the Premier League relegation zone.
