Even the best changeup in the world couldn’t have saved rookie lefty Henry Owens this time.
Owens couldn’t spot his fastball yesterday. It sat in the high-80s and topped out at 90 mph, had little action and routinely caught too much of the plate.
Owens was lit up by the Yankees, allowing seven runs on six hits (including two homers) in 12⁄3 innings as the Sox fell, 13-8, at Fenway Park. He was pulled after just 53 pitches in the worst of his six major league starts.
“Fell behind in some counts, left some fastballs over the plate, and they put very good swings on them,” said Owens, whose ERA swelled to 5.
