The majority of the best defensive seasons ever produced by a catcher have occurred since 2000. The caught-stealing percentage record was broken in 2000, then again in 2001, and one more time in 2005. Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez (above) took the game by storm with his rookie season in 2014, and while he hasn’t been quite as good at throwing since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015 (Vazquez has thrown out just 37 percent of would-be base stealers this season), his arm is strong enough to make a run at the record at some point during his career.
