Manny Ramirez’s official job title with the Cubs is hitting consultant, which puts him behind hitting instructor John Mallee and his assistant, Eric Hinske, on the coaching food chain.
But Ramirez’s actual duties are more difficult to define. It looks as though his main job is just being Manny, and Manny being Manny is something he obviously does well.
Truth be told, Ramirez is probably more counselor than consultant, listening to players when they ask for help and offering advice if needed. He knows his role and goes out of his way not to step on Mallee’s toes or take credit for the grind-it-out approach the Cubs have adopted.
